Don your boots for a walking week in alluring Montenegro with Headwater
MONTENEGRO MAY be tiny, but it sure packs a punch. Lying in the south Adriatic – bordering Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Albania – it is arguably the most diverse, interesting and alluring country in Europe, and is crammed with cultural heritage, architectural treasures and jaw-dropping natural beauty

New for summer 2015, Headwater’s gentle-paced, twin-centre, walking week is a glorious and contrasting mix. Starting in the mountainous north, you will explore first the vast Durmitor National Park, with its glacial lakes, dense forests – masses of endemic species and rare birds of prey – sparkling streams and fast-flowing rivers. There is a visit to the UNESCO listed Tara River (second deepest canyon in the world at 1300 metres, after Colorado) with the incredible roar of over 40 waterfalls crashing into the rapids below being heard for miles around.
For the second part of the trip guests head south, to the warm shores of the Adriatic, described by Lord Byron as ‘the most beautiful encounter between land and sea’, where picturesque coastal villages cling vertiginously to rock walls jutting out dramatically from the sea. You will stay in Venetian Perast, which is considered the prettiest village in Montenegro, and explore its lovely streets, historic churches, peaceful palazzos and hidden squares. For a totally different perspective, there are boat trips around Lake Skadar to view its famous 14th century island monasteries, which are still inhabited by Orthodox Christian monks and nuns, and the shores of tranquil Kotor Bay with its secluded islets.
